WILLEMSTAD–The Prosecutor’s Office withdrew its appeal to the High Court in the Netherlands against the acquittal by the Dutch Caribbean’s Joint Court of Justice of December 13, 2018, in the case against former President of the Central Bank of Curaçao and St. Maarten (CBCS) Emsley Tromp.
In his judgment of the end of last year, the joint court in Willemstad acquitted Tromp of every accusation by indicating that his tax returns are not only in order, but there is also no evidence of any intent of fiscal fraud.
Although this latest decision by the prosecution does not come as a surprise given the court’s unequivocal acquittal, Tromp is said to be relieved that his legal “nightmare” of nearly two-and-a-half years is coming to an end.
The process only caused enormous – and virtually irreparable – reputational damage, but above all led to his resignation as CBCS-president. It regards an institute (earlier of the Netherlands Antilles) for which he laboured almost 30 years “with a lot of energy” but had to leave through the back door just before his retirement.
In the coming period, Tromp will consider further steps aimed at recovering the damage suffered as a result of the “unjustified prosecution.”
