Airport interior demo work to start this week

AIRPORT–Demolition of the mold-infested interior sheetrock walls of Princess Juliana International Airport’s terminal building is to start this week after a contractor is selected on Tuesday.

The airport has followed the required procurement procedures, Michel Hyman, Airport Chief Operations Officer and acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) said in a press statement issued Sunday.
The inspectors recently checked the building and are to give a report on the mold infestation along with recommendations.
Everyone, who enters the building, has to put on their personal protective gear. “This is standard practice and we don’t want to endanger the health of anyone,” he said.
Due to water leaks, constant fogging has been carried out inside the building to avoid mosquito breeding and to safeguard the health of our employees.”
Hurricanes Irma and Maria caused severe damage to the building when they blow through in September, rendering the building largely unusable. Regular flight operations resumed on October 10 with arriving and departing passengers process the lower section of the building, in tents and via the fixed-based operations (FBO) building.
Soon, two large air-conditioned and equipped tents will be erected at the airport to better accommodate arriving and departing passengers and other airport users until the terminal building is restored to its pre-Hurricane Irma state.
The FBO building will revert to its original use once the tents are up. This will make it possible for the airport to accommodate increased private jet traffic that come with the holiday season.
The airport is “working tirelessly” to ensure the terminal building rehabilitated and restored “to the envious position it held before the storms,” said Hyman.
