ANGUILLA–Anguilla Community College (ACC) President Dr. Karl Dawson welcomed educators and guests on Wednesday, December 12, to one of ACC’s three-part series of workshops addressing special needs students within Anguilla’s education system.

He stated that he is proud to be a part of the ACC team that has selected the area of special needs as its lead area of focus within the community, thereby giving voice to those whose voices need amplification.

Njeri Richardson Carty, a special needs educator and educational consultant with a specialty in working with autistic students, facilitated the half-day workshop. She expressed her gratitude for being able to share her experiences and knowledge of her work with special needs students. She gave special mention and praise to the parents of special needs students, stressing the need for a partnership and communication with the family.

The ACC’s plan going forward in this area is to learn for themselves of the special needs issues within the community by working closely with groups already in the forefront of this issue as well as being active in community education related to special needs by being advocates wherever and whenever possible. ACC will make space available for training, education and discussion around special needs. Lastly, they will advocate outreach within this community by actively and personally reaching out to special needs youngsters within the community.

Prior to the start of the workshop, Shellecia Brooks-Johnson took a few minutes to cover yet another ACC initiative entitled ACC’s 12 Days of Christmas. From December 2 through December 18, ACC is offering workshops, free of charge or at a nominal fee, for learning skills such as creating digital Christmas cards as well as creating Christmas decorations, learning how to bake local specialties such as fruit cake and tarts as well as how to mix holiday-themed cocktails and “mocktails,” and many more fun activities.
