ANGUILLA–Twelve athletes and seven managers and coaches are going to the Gold Coast, Australia for the Commonwealth Games due to be held from April 4 to 15. The athletes will be competing against the 5,000 athletes from 71 other nations attending and will feature in track and field, cycling and boxing events.
Chef de Mission Cardigan Connor, who is the Parliamentary Secretary responsible for sports, said that this year has been challenging. However, sponsorship has been given from the Social Security Board and from two Anguillians in Australia, Keith Connor, a former gold medal Olympian, and Mervyn Christian, who have been raising funds there. The Commonwealth Games Association is funding air travel and accommodation for the group.
Social Security presented a cheque for US $23,500 on March 19 that will provide outfits for the team including blazers, track suits and polo shirts. Director of Sports Andre Collins said he is very excited to see the Anguillian athletes and congratulated them on their achievements. He said he looks forward to best performances ever.
Deputy Director of Sports in Anguilla Rollins Richardson left the island on March 20 to make arrangements in advance for the team. He said that this year the athletes are more prepared than previously; the boxers have been in Trinidad and Tobago for training, some of the athletes who are at United States (US) colleges have been training there and the cyclists have had extra practice ahead of the team in Australia. Most of the athletes leave at the weekend.
Competing in the Track and Field events are sprinters Mauriel Davon Carty (200-metre), Rechelle Ann Meade (100-metre), Artesha Roseanna Richardson (400-metre), T-Kailah Rosheda Richardson (200-metre) and Saymon Rijo Morris (200-metre). The cyclists are Sherwin Wendell Osborne, Hasani Ron Hennis, Saleem Sa’eed Romney, Huekeemi Daekuawn Hughes and Zambezi Richardson. The boxers are Curlun Luvique Richardson and Kenwai Ronel Hodge. The ages range from 17 to 35 years.
Accompanying the team will be Cardigan Connor, Andre Collins, Rollins Richardson, Althea Hodge, and Coaches Derrick Carty, Alexis Ryan and Calvert Fleming.
Although officially participating as part of the English team, Anguillians Shara Proctor (long jump) and Zharnel Hughes (sprinter) will also be at the Games.
