Anguilla Stronger hosts party for hotel workers at Christmas

ANGUILLA–Many tourism workers and their families in Anguilla enjoyed a fun-filled afternoon at Sandy Ground Playground on Friday, December 22, organised by the Anguilla Stronger organisation.

The group is a relief organisation created in early October to provide aid to all employees of the four Founders’ resorts – Four Seasons Resort and Residences Anguilla; Belmond Cap Juluca; Malliouhana, an Auberge Resort; and Zemi Beach House Resort and Spa – while they have no income during the resorts’ closure and repair period. Anguilla Stronger is funded through donations of both hospitality-related corporations and private citizens who love Anguilla, and has raised over US $1 million to date.

The afternoon included food and drink tents plus the island’s ice-cream truck with bouncy castles, games, Santa Claus and a deejay for the youngsters and adults alike. Each child received a present and additional gifts were raffled off for the adults, including a grand prize trip donated by Starwood Capital Group, to New York, with roundtrip airline tickets and a two-night stay at the 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge.

Starwood Capital Group, which owns the Four Seasons Anguilla resort, led the group of hotels that partnered with the Hope Centre to identify the immediate and long-term sustenance needs of their employees. Almost immediately after its formation shipments of uncooked food, hygiene and home-repair items began arriving into Anguilla for weekly distribution to employees of the four resorts.

Additionally, Anguilla Stronger instituted a free hot and cold lunch programme five days weekly at the Relief Centre located at the Four Seasons Anguilla for all employees of the four resorts and family members. Cell-charging stations, hot showers and ironing facilities rounded out the services offered. Construction materials to assist employees whose homes were badly damaged or destroyed are included in this initiative.

One of the core principles of Anguilla Stronger is that all aid recipients pledge to give back to the community through volunteer initiatives. One such project is working at the Tender Loving Care seniors’ home. Many participating hotel employees served lunch while socialising with the residents at the home during the Tuesday, December 26, Boxing Day celebration.

The hotels collectively employ more than 1,000 Anguillian residents. Four Seasons employs approximately 550 people, Belmond Cap Juluca about 200, Malliouhana 153 people and Zemi Beach 149.
