ANGUILLA–There was a 72.6 per cent decline in visitors to Anguilla for January compared to the same period in 2017. This is to be expected with so many properties still under repair from Hurricane Irma. There were just 4,965 visitors this year compared to 18,114 in January last year. The good news is that there has been a steady increase in visitors since Irma with 653 in September, followed by 833 in October, 2,352 in November and 4,232 in December.
January’s passenger arrivals, which includes visitors as well as residents, showed a decline from January of the prior year, but at a slower rate when compared with previous months since Irma. The majority arrived through Blowing Point terminal that saw 7,550 of arrivals followed by Sandy Ground with 1,195 and Clayton J. Lloyd Airport with 1,878.
Tourist or stay-over visitor arrivals for January were 2,804 which is the smallest number of arrivals for any January as far back as 1993. The intended average length of stay for tourists was 11.7 days, up from the 7.9 days reported in January 2017. This was the longest recorded intended length of stay for tourists during any January since 2003.
Excursionist arrivals for the month under review totalled 2,161 arrivals, registering an 80.1 per cent decline from those of January 2017. Although the numbers for this type of visitor have been increasing monthly after the passage of Hurricane Irma, recovery for this group is slower than for tourist arrivals, for which monthly figures have been usually higher than for excursionist arrivals.
