PHILIPSBURG–Study Financing Division Head Antonio Aventurin, a seasoned motorbike rider, sustained serious injuries, including two broken legs and a fractured nose, during a motorbike accident on Walter Nisbeth Road on Sunday afternoon.
Aventurin’s sister Claire Elshot said on Wednesday that her brother had been travelling on Walter Nisbeth Road when the brakes on his bike failed, resulting in him slamming into the wall at the Salt Pickers Roundabout near the Philipsburg police station.
The collision caused Aventurin to be pitched into the air from his bike and slammed onto the ground. His motorbike, which was also propelled into the air, fell on top of Aventurin compounding his injuries. He was rushed to the St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) where he underwent treatment, and was flown out to a specialised hospital in the Dominican Republic on Monday. His wife Jessy Aventurin accompanied him.
Elshot said Aventurin was expected to undergo a number of surgeries on Wednesday. “He sustained severe injuries from that crash and when I arrived at the Emergency Room at SMMC, we immediately realised that the type of injuries cannot be handled in St. Maarten,” Elshot said. “He has injuries to both legs – both are broken – and he sustained a laceration to his forehead. We later discovered that his nose was also broken. Throughout the entire process he has been stable and is talking and is conscious.”
Elshot said her brother is a seasoned and well-known motorbike rider. He has had incidents on his motorbike in the past, but never of this magnitude. Prior to the accident on Sunday, he had been leading the participants in a bicycle race. During the accident, he was wearing his helmet and other motorbike safety gear.
On behalf his wife and the Aventurin family, Elshot thanked everyone for their good wishes and prayers for her brother.
