WILLEMSTAD–Curaçao and St. Maarten lottery boss Robbie dos Santos filed an injunction against Maduro & Curiel’s Bank (MCB) for cancelling his business and personal accounts there as well as at subsidiary Windward Islands Bank (WIB).
His lawyer Berti Braam said this makes it impossible for the employer to function and more than 200 jobs on both islands are at risk.
Leo Rigaud of Curaçao Banking Association said this has to do with the so-called “corresponding banking” issue. Even though the local numbers games sold by Robbie’s Lottery are legal, US banks shy away from gambling as part of their de-risking policy.
The court on April 1, 2015, ordered confiscation of 72.5 million Antillean guilders from Dos Santos on American bank accounts in the “Bientu” fraud, tax evasion and money laundering case.
