Antonio Aventurin upon his return to St. Maarten.
AIRPORT–Study Financing Division Head Antonio Aventurin returned home to St. Maarten on Wednesday, after spending a month in the Dominican Republic where he was undergoing treatment for injuries sustained in a serious bike accident in July.
Aventurin was warmly received by his biker buddies, who surprised him upon arrival at Princess Juliana International Airport and treated him to a motorcade to his home.
Aventurin, who was flown out on July 22, is expected to make a full recovery. One of his legs is still in cast, and his sister Claire Elshot-Aventurin said that so far all has been progressing well with his recovery.
Aventurin, a seasoned bike rider, sustained serious injuries including two broken legs and a fractured nose during a motorbike accident on the Walter Nisbeth Road in July. He had been traveling when the brakes on his bike failed resulting in him slamming into the wall at the Salt Pickers Roundabout near the Philipsburg Police Station.
The collision caused Aventurin to be pitched into the air from his bike and slammed onto the ground. His motorbike, which was also propelled into the air, fell on top of him compounding his injuries. He was rushed to the St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) where he underwent treatment and was flown out to a specialized hospital in the Dominican Republic soon after. His wife Jessy Aventurin accompanied him.
Prior to the accident, he had been leading the participants in a bicycle race. During the accident, he was wearing his helmet and other motorbike safety gear. He underwent a number of surgeries and is said to be happy to be back home with family and friends.
