Bureau for Intellectual Property (BIP) Director Vincentia Rosen-Sandiford recently delivered the bureau’s policy plan and 2019-2023 financial forecasts to Economic Affairs Minister Stuart Johnson.

The minister is required by law to review the budget and approve it if all is in order. Johnson granted BIP a deadline extension on the submission of its plan and forecast based on work disruption due to the aftermath of Hurricane Irma in 2017. The bureau had to more to a new office after the hurricane. BIP’s work “cannot be understated,” said Johnson. He encourages local talents to protect their intellectual property via the bureau. “Knowing what your rights to your creations are is very important,” he said. The bureau creates awareness about the importance of intellectual property via posts on social media, event participation, and workshops that target businesses and entrepreneurs in St. Maarten, said Rosen-Sandiford.
