Boat wrecks to be removed

A salvage crew arrived here Monday with a 150-tonne crane, barge and heavy equipment to assist with the removal of the damaged vessels and debris from Simpson Bay Lagoon. The salvage effort is led by Yacht Club of Port de Plaisance, the first marina to announce it intends to be open for yachts as of November 1. Yacht Club Managing Director Jeff Boyd said time is of the essence with the yachting season approaching. The rebuilding of marinas can only physically start when wrecks are removed. Removal of the sunken vessels is often the easier part, he said. Precautions and making sure the environment and lagoon water quality are not compromised become even harder tasks. Nature Foundation will assist with all lifts. “We are at the Government’s disposal at any time, should they need our assistance and/or that of the equipment we have secured,” Boyd added.
