Broadreach students upon their return from National Park The Quill.
ST. EUSTATIUS–Broadreach has been very busy over the last few days contributing to St. Eustatius’ community. St. Eustatius National Park STENAPA has been working with Broadreach during the summer months for many years, said STENAPA Director Clarissa Buma.
Broadreach is a summer camp programme, during which students sail on catamarans throughout the Caribbean. They learn about the sea and the islands and offer community service to the islands during their visit, such as garden work, clearing hiking trails and beach clean-ups.
The level of students varies between middle- and high-school and college-level students. This time 25 students from Belgium, the United States and Canada are visiting Statia. “They also enjoy our marine park as they scuba dive on our famous reefs,” Buma said.
On Tuesday the group worked at Miriam C. Schmidt Botanical Garden side by side with STENAPA ranger Nadio Spanner. After the 2017 hurricanes, there is a lot to do to bring back the Garden to its former glory, said Buma
The Broadreach visitors also performed a variety of services to the community around the island by painting some homes of Statia residents. The group also climbed at National Park The Quill.
