Budget changes in Parliament today

PHILIPSBURG–Members of Parliament (MPs) will be back in Parliament today, Friday, for an urgent sitting on changes to the 2017 budget. The public plenary session in Parliament House starts at 10:00am.

Finance Minister Richard Gibson Sr. will table the changes, which were already handled in a Central Committee session on Wednesday.

Gibson Sr. issued a call on Wednesday to MPs to take a non-partisan approach by approving the amendments to the 2017 budget. The amendments are to make room for some NAf. 67 million liquidity support from the Dutch Government.

The budget amendments are crucial for the country to receive much-needed liquidity support from the Dutch Government following the devastation and economic downturn caused by Hurricane Irma slamming into the country on September 6.

“It is not a partisan issue,” Gibson Sr. told those MPs who broke their annual holiday recess to attend the sitting. “It is an essential step” to help Government’s liquidity position at least until March by fending off any default.

The parliamentary session will be live on St. Maarten Cable TV Channel 120, SXM GOV radio FM 107.9, Pearl Radio FM 98.1,
