PHILIPSBURG–Businesses in Philipsburg are allowed to open their doors and serve consumers on St. Maarten/St. Martin Day, Monday, November 11, but are cautioned to adhere to the country’s labour laws.
Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunications (TEATT) Stuart Johnson said on Wednesday that permission has been granted for businesses in Philipsburg to open for St. Maarten Day. He said that in an effort to stimulate economic activity, it is important that as many allowances as possible are made under the current circumstances.
He said also that considerations were given to the fact that there will be two cruise ships in port on Monday: Celebrity Summit from Celebrity Cruise Lines and Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas. With this in mind, Johnson said, a decision was made to give businesses an opportunity to open to serve guests rather than being closed. He said guests cannot be invited to the island and the doors of businesses are closed to them.
He urged businesses to ensure that they adhere to the labour laws if they make use of the opportunity to open on this day.
