ST.EUSTATIUS–Many activities are planned on St. Eustatius for the long Easter holidays. Acting Island Governor Julian Woodley notified the public and shops and businesses in particular, that he granted a temporary exemption to shops and businesses, which should be closed by virtue of Section Two of the Wet Winkelsluiting BES, to be open on Easter Sunday, April 16, for eight hours between 7:00am and 9:00pm.
On Good Friday, April 14, St. Eustatius National Parks Stenapa are holding their annual Lionfish Fry at the Gallows Bay office from 12:30pm to 3:00pm.
Free tasting of lionfish will be available alongside talks, demonstrations and a Kids’ Play Corner. Lionfish will be served in a few ways.
Information about why persons should eat lionfish will be provided at 1:00pm and 2:15pm. A demonstration of how persons can clean lionfish for themselves will begin at 1:45pm. The demonstration will show persons how to prepare the fish without getting stung.
“Please join us for a day of good food, relaxing atmosphere, and you might even learn something too,” said Stenapa’s Education and Outreach Officer Hannah Fairley.
Stenapa has been culling lionfish since 2010, and aims to get lionfish onto the menu on Statia. Lionfish are an invasive species in the Caribbean. They eat juvenile fish and multiply quickly, therefore creating monocultures in sensitive coral-reef ecosystems.
“They have very little natural predators. The only way we can get Lionfish out of Statia’s waters is through our stomachs. We have to eat them to beat them,” said Marine Park Ranger Mervina Redan.
Turbulanzz Band will be hosting a food sale event on Saturday, starting at 12:00pm. Later that day the Band will be playing live at 318 Right Field. A band from St. Kitts will be playing alongside Turbulanzz that night.
