MARIGOT–Artist Ruby Bute is organising a day-long pre-Mothers Day celebration of art, music, sale of locally-made products, food and drink, at her home and art gallery in Friar’s Bay this coming Saturday, May 5.
Devotees of Ruby Bute events will appreciate the wonderful location of this cultural property with its expansive garden and magnificent 300-year-old silk cotton tree, perfect for outdoor events.
However, as Bute admits herself, it has been about four or five years since she last organised an event. Many will remember the well-received shows “The Gentleman and his Coat” and others.
“I was thinking about what I could do for a post-Irma event, something that would lighten the minds of people,” she said. “All over the island I notice people are being very active and creative. They are finding ways to keep the island going. I’ve been thinking about a gathering in a pleasant relaxed atmosphere with entertainment, then I realised a pre-Mothers Day celebration would give people time to look for that special gift.
“’Not too big,’ I thought … a mini art exhibition, with vendors, music, food and drink. But people are already hearing about it, so it’s growing into a big celebration that I was trying to keep small. It’s become a Ruby thing again.”
Her own gallery will be open, of course, and she will present some new artists along with well-established artists such as her good friend, surrealist Stephanie Thihyani. A new artist is pastelist Valerie Daux from France who has joined Ruby’s Wednesday art club, then there are Larry McGhill from Canada, watercolorist Christiane Ladeom from Martinique, and musician and artist Nigel Williams who is now based in California.
The artists will have their own stands under umbrellas or tents. Vendors will also have their stands, selling homemade products such as natural honey and various oils, jewellery, soaps, traditional handmade knitted garments, patchwork and spreads.
Ruby’s daughter Jacqueline Vrolyk will be selling a line of cosmetics and skincare products, and Linda Smart will be displaying her handmade jewellery. Local food, punches, and homemade Guavaberry will be available, and rotis from Trinidad. Roses will be on sale as well.
It is also hoped to have dominos and belote players join in, playing under the Sandbox tree, the banter and slap of dominos on the table and abundance of cold beers adding to the ambience.
“It’s going to be a special family fun day, and an opportunity to buy unique gifts for Mothers Day. I’m looking forward to it myself and hope many will come out,” Bute said. “We need to have something light-hearted to lift the spirits and overcome the trauma of Irma and find normalcy again.”
Entry is free and the event is open from 10:00am to 5:00pm. There is limited parking inside the property; otherwise, parking is available outside on the road.
