PHILIPSBURG–Caretaker Prime Minister Wycliffe Smith will again head the St. Maarten Christian Party (SMCP) slate of candidates at the January 9, 2020, snap parliamentary elections. Smith, the SMCP Leader, had also led the party to the polls in the 2018 elections. A source close to the party said Smith will run at the top of the list followed by Member of Parliament (MP) Claude “Chacho” Peterson as the number 2 candidate.
Deputy Minister Plenipotentiary Michael Somersal is expected to be the number 3 candidate and Chief of Staff of Minister Smith’s Cabinet Peter J. Gittens, will run as the number four candidate. Gittens is also Deputy Leader of SMCP. The Daily Herald understands that a woman is likely to take the number 5 position on the party slate. SMCP amassed 1,181 votes in the 2018 elections and won one seat in Parliament. All the parties contesting the election are expected to submit their party list of candidates on Nomination Day, which is set for Thursday, November 21. Election Day will be on January 9, 2020, and the dissolution of Parliament and convening of the New Parliament on February 10, 2020.
