ST. EUSTATIUS–Cathryn Sanchez was crowned Junior Carnival Queen 2017 on Wednesday in the fairy-tale themed event, during which the young contestants showcased their lady-like personalities. Together with Sanchez, six young princesses vied for the crown; her opponents being Navienska Cuvalay, Gercia Brown, Dayna Richardson, Elshe Spanner, and Kevoya Smitten. The pageant was moderated by Masters of Ceremony Sjahairah Fleming and Anthony Reid. Headed by Angelique Roumou, the panel of judges consisted of Micheline Hunt and Anica Marsdin.

Head Judge Roumou is a mother of two and policy advisor of Tourism and a project manager. She was also involved in Miss Universe 2000 and is an advocate of the fight against women abuse. Hunt is St. Maarten’s Miss Mature 2017-2018, and Marsdin worked as a civil servant for 42 years. She was also involved in sports and teenage pageants. At present, she is enjoying her pension.
Sanchez claimed the title with a winning total of 394 points. She received US $1,500 in cash, an IPad, a gift basket and other prizes. She also won the titles for Best Fantasy, Best Interview and Best Speech. Navienska Cuvalay ended first-runner up with 372 points, and also won in the categories of Best Talent and Best Princess (Apparel). She took home $800, an IPad, a teddy bear and other items. Second-runner up with 366 points Elshe Spanner won US $500, gift cards, and other prizes. The title of Miss Photogenic went to Dayna Richardson.

The Aloei Dancers entertained the crowd during the intermission. The pageant was hosted by Once a Queen Always a Queen Productions, headed by former Miss St. Eustatius Carnival Queen for 2015/2016 Sherees Timber. She also was the overall-segment winner and first runner-up in the 2016 Miss Dutch Caribbean Pageant during last year’s Summer Festival on Saba.
Tonight, Friday night, is Big Bacchanal Friday, featuring Triple Kay and Asa Banton at Carnival Village.
