CBCS will ensure supply of guilders | THE DAILY HERALD

PHILIPSBURG –The Central Bank of Curaçao and St. Maarten (CBCS) says it received questions from the media in response to statements made by Finance Minister Michael Ferrier with respect to a limited supply of Antillean guilder banknotes.

CBCS is the only institution legally authorised to issue banknotes and coins in the monetary union as well as to facilitate the circulation of money.

“In anticipation of the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles on October 10, 2010, the necessary preparatory work had been done by CBCS to introduce a new currency for the monetary union of Curaçao and St. Maarten – the Caribbean guilder,” stated a press release.

“Currently CBCS is in discussion with the governments of Curaçao and St. Maarten to reach an agreement on the implementation of a new currency for the two countries. Until a decision is taken by the governments, the current Netherlands Antillean guilder banknotes will remain in circulation.”

Meanwhile, the Central Bank assures that it will continue to take care of having a sufficient supply of banknotes to be able to “meet the demand at all times.”
