Charlotte Brookson Academy student makes CXC 2019 regional merit list | THE DAILY HERALD

Jeremiah David.

PHILIPSBURG–Charlotte Brookson Academy (CBA) of the Performance Arts’ candidate of the class of 2019, Jeremiah David, has captured a spot on the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) regional merit list.

Jeremiah placed fourth on the list for Theatre Arts (Dance), by earning a grade 1 with a straight “A” profile. Not only did Jeremiah excel in Dance, but he also captured outstanding results by earning grade 1 passes in English, Mathematics, Electronic Document Preparation and Management, Human and Social Biology, Chemistry, Visual Arts and Biology with straight A profiles in all, but one. Jeremiah also passed with an A for his Dutch Cambridge exam, CBA announced in a press release on Wednesday.

CBA said throughout his academic journey, Jeremiah displayed the disposition of a self-motivated perfectionist, excelled in all of his subjects and consistently maintained a position on CBA’s honour roll. However, it was Dance that propelled him on to the ultimate level of CXC recognition through the attainment of that coveted spot on the CXC regional merit list.

“Our CBA family was ecstatic upon learning that a student from our fledgling little school, along with two students from the St. Maarten Academy had achieved placement on the merit list,” Claudette Forsythe-Labega Director of CBA said. “By copping a number four position on this list CBA held its own among the accomplished schools both locally and on the much larger Caribbean islands, which boast a CXC history that spans several decades. This accomplishment speaks to the quality of our performing arts programme and validates the importance of the institution as the only Performing Arts Secondary school in the Caribbean”.

Forsythe-Labega said that her team at CBA could not unilaterally take the credit for Jeremiah’s success in the area of Dance. The National Institute of the Arts (NIA) also contributed in no small measure to the development of Jeremiah’s tremendous talent as a dancer. Forsythe-Labega also expressed the hope that this milestone for CBA would serve to make government sit up and take notice of the importance of funding the art programmes at the institution. “If we have been able to do so much without any financial support from government for our art programme, imagine how much more we would have been able to accomplish with adequate funding,” she said.

Founder of the Charlotte Brookson Academy of the Performance Arts, J. Augusty through Jeremiah David, saw the realization of the dream of her late grandmother, after whom the school was named, “To create opportunities for underserved youngsters to excel through their talents in the area of the arts and the academics.”

When asked to express his feelings about his achievement Jeremiah said, “My high school career at the Charlotte Brookson Academy of the Performance Arts, was a journey filled with many ups and downs. However, through the strong support of parents, friends, teachers and staff members alike, I was able to succeed in ways I could only dream of.”

“I am forever grateful for those who have directly and indirectly provided me with the tools and resources to enter the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Examinations with enthusiasm and confidence. A special thank you to the National Institute of Arts, which hosted the Theatre Arts/Dance programme at CBA, under the guidance of Arlene Halley, for providing the facilities for a young artist to freely create, learn and appreciate the craft. I would also like to thank my former teachers, Principal and the support staff at CBA for continuously encouraging and assisting me in realizing my worth as a growing and developing human being. Making the CXC merit list was never the main goal but I am ecstatic to have made my school and family proud.

“Jeremiah David is currently furthering his studies at the International Baccalaureat Programme at the St. Dominic High School and will be honoured with his fellow graduates at CBA’s commencement ceremony on December 13 at the Belair Community Center in Cay Hill,” the school concludes.
