ST. EUSTATIUS–A church service for cancer survivors and patients facilitated by Golden Rock Cancer Awareness Foundation was held at Bethel Methodist Church on Sunday.

The well-attended service under the motto “13 Shades of Pink” marked the difference, but also highlighted the fact that cancer does not discriminate based on colour, age, size or religion. Cancer affects everyone in a different manner, whether a person is fighting the disease, in remission or is dealing with the loss of a loved one because he or she lost the fight to cancer.

Cancer survivor Eardley Woodley reminded visitors on behalf of the foundation to be champion of their own lives and quoted the foundation’s motto “Early detection is the key to saving lives.”

The service featured several performances and speeches, and cancer survivors as well as victims were featured and remembered prominently during the service.

Free breast examinations will take place 1:00-3:00pm today, Thursday, October 24, at Queen Beatrix Medical Centre (QBMC). The screenings are organised as part of a collaboration between the Cancer Foundation and QBMC. Dr. Fazal Baboe is expected to carry out the examinations.

Anyone wishing to take advantage of the health screenings is asked to make an appointment by contacting the QBMC front desk at tel. 318-2371 or 319-1500. The free health screenings were extended because of the interest from the community.

A Walk for a Cure from St. Eustatius Auxiliary Home to the end of the Boardwalk in Lower Town will be organised on Wednesday, October 30, 6:30-8:30pm.

In marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a special Taste of the Cultures will be held at Mike van Putten Youth Centre/Lions’ Den on Thursday, October 31, 6:00-9:00pm. The event features food and drinks from various countries and islands from around the world.

The Cancer Foundation is requesting persons to wear the colour pink during October to show support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
