PHILIPSBURG–Windward Islands Teachers Union (WITU) President Claire Elshot attended the executive meeting of the Caribbean Union of Teachers (CUT) at Rex Resorts in Grenada on December 12 and 13.

Eighteen other union units were in attendance out of the 26 CUT affiliated units. Elshot said participants had received a warm welcome to Grenada.

The opening ceremony of the CUT executive meeting included presentations from the President of the Grenada teachers’ union; the CUT President, who is from St. Lucia; the Canadian Federation of Teachers; and a cultural presentation from a student who spoke about issues such as slavery and made a passionate plea to be educated; amongst others.

The marking of School-Based Examinations (SBAs) for the Caribbean Examinations Council CXC and the compensation that teachers should receive for this were among the many issues discussed during the two-day meeting, following which Elshot will attend a two-day education conference under the theme: “Leadership in times of crisis: promoting sustainable development.”

Elshot left the country on December 12 and is expected to return on December 17.
