A lengthy section of this canal outside Port St. Maarten is choked with grass and bushes. The stagnant green-algae-covered water is also coated with plastic and glass trash. The canal is vital for the drain-off of water from the road to Pointe Blanche in times of heavy rains and flooding. The road is the only way in and out of this community some three minutes outside of St. Maarten’s capital Philipsburg. (Audrey van de Riet photo)
