PHILIPSBURG–The St. Maarten Chamber of Commerce and Industry (COCI) has issued a call to Parliament and government to move quickly to ban single-use plastic items and to promote environmentally-friendly alternatives to benefit the economy and the destination’s image.
COCI signalled its support for the single-use plastic ban citing data from Nature Foundation on the ecological damage caused by single-use plastic bags, cutlery and other items.
COCI Executive Director Anastacio Baker applauded businesses such as Topper’s restaurant, Dinghy Dock Bar, Buccaneers Beach Bar, Lagoonies and Coconut Reef Tours that have moved to only reusable and biodegradable products.
“It makes good business sense to do away with single-use plastic materials and replace that with reusable and biodegradable products,” said Baker.
A number of Caribbean islands have put and are putting legislation in place to ban single-use plastic bags, straws and Styrofoam boxes.
COCI encourages residents to use reusable shopping bags, as this benefits the environment.
