MARIGOT–The Collectivité announced schools will not be open today, Tuesday, December 17, contrary to an earlier announcement from the Préfecture, as it is not able to provide school transportation, cleaning of classes and operation of the canteens.
“The Collectivité is informing parents that it is unable to mobilise school transportation for Tuesday, December 17, nor to clean the classes in time for tomorrow morning.
“Caisse Territorial des Oeuvres Scolaires (CTOS) was also unable to replenish its stocks and prepare meals for the canteen. In this difficult context for students, the Collectivité advises the parents of students registered in the public schools to keep the children at home Tuesday, December 17. The Collectivité will keep parents informed of the situation for Thursday and Friday.”
Meanwhile, traffic flow improved on Monday as Grand Case and Rue de Hollande barricades were removed. Gendarmes removed the barricades positioned at the start of RN7 bypass in Grand Case during Sunday night, enabling traffic circulation to resume between Marigot and French Quarter, the Préfecture reported in an update Monday.
Gendarmes came under attack from projectiles thrown from roofs, but were able to prevent the barricades from being reassembled. Barricades still remain in place in French Quarter and Sandy Ground.
A roadblock on Rue de Hollande close to the Agrément roundabout has also been removed. The Préfecture recommends that the public avoid Sandy Ground and French Quarter and remain vigilant on roads that are open. There is still a lot of debris remaining from the protests. The Collectivité noted it has resumed waste collection and clean-up in areas that are still accessible.
A spontaneous protest occurred in Rambaud around 4:00pm Monday, lasting well into the evening, after a member of District Council Two was allegedly manhandled by Gendarmes. The circumstances of what happened and why were not clear.
A large crowd of young people filled the road causing traffic to be backed up all the way to Marigot. A bystander indicated it was a peaceful protest, also against the natural risk prevention plan PPRN, and not meant to block the road. Gendarmes were present observing.
The ferry terminal and airports are functioning as normal. Access to Princess Juliana Airport is possible via Bellevue.
Gendarmes remain vigilant and visible to assist with circulation on the main roads, to prevent any acts of violence and any attempts to erect new barricades.
