Collectivité continues with Sargassum weed clean-up

The Bay of Cul-de-Sac after the recent clean-up.

MARIGOT–The Collectivité states it is continuing with the daily clean-up of Sargassum weed started on April 14, 2018.

The past five days have seen a major clean-up effort in the Bay of Cul-de-Sac, one of the areas with the most concentration of weed, to have the site ready for Fish Day on Sunday, May 6. Further clean-up will take place in the next few days on Orient Beach, Le Galion and Baie Lucas in Oyster Pond.

The Collectivité added it has acquired more backhoes to remove weed and recruited a new “Green Brigade” of workers. The insertion association A-SIS Service is deploying some 25 young labourers to work on the beaches.

Health authority Agence Régionale de Santé (ARS) says there is no danger to the population from the weed. The level of Hydrogen Sulphur is “very weak” in the affected bays despite presence of the odour.
