MARIGOT–Cleaning-up of the dozen or so temporary emergency sites around the territory storing hurricane debris is proceeding in earnest, the Collectivité stated.
Excavators and backhoes are loading up trucks with zinc, wood, metal, and other bulky items to reduce the mountains of debris and return the sites to their original state.
Sites that have been completely cleared away since the beginning of the operation in November include the districts of French Quarter, Cul-de-Sac and La Savane. Those in Mont Vernon, Concordia, Sandy Ground and Galisbay are currently being excavated and in some cases are well-advanced.
This large-scale operation requires nearly 300 daily roundtrips to the eco-landfill in Grandes Cayes. The Collectivité will then proceed to remove the last cumbersome items deposited in various public areas. This cleaning work should be completed in January 2018.
The Collectivité has also ordered 420 new garbage bins for household waste. The collection of household garbage as it existed prior to the passage of Irma has been operational since the beginning of October.
Household waste must be deposited in the bins provided for this purpose, at the time defined by the Collectivité, or every day after 6:00pm. Some 120 bins have just been installed in the neighbourhoods pending the arrival of the 300 additional bins already ordered. These will be installed by the beginning of the year 2018.
The population is asked to respect these new bins by depositing only household waste (large bulky items are prohibited). As a reminder, it is strictly forbidden to deposit waste (whatever it is) on the roadsides.
Large bulky items from individuals and businesses must be taken directly to the recycling facility in Galisbay or to the eco-site in Grandes Cayes, Cul-de-Sac. The environmental police and the territorial police are responsible for ensuring compliance with these orders.
