Collectivité holds prize ceremony for second edition of Faces of St. Martin | THE DAILY HERALD

MARIGOT–Prizes for the second Faces of St. Martin competition were awarded in the garden of Hotel de la Collectivité on Saturday afternoon with the eight photographers who participated.

The eight who participated were Valerie Vincent, Nathalie Beaurain, Steph Deziles, Laurelie Peterson, Jean-Robert Cajuste, Mathieu Alexandre, Christian Mansana, and Guillaume Coelho.

It was Steph Deziles who captured the first prize of 500 euros, Laurelie Peterson was second with 350 euros and third place went to Nathalie Beaurain with a prize of 250 euros.

The exhibition follows the very well-received first edition held in June 2017. It is based on the street art project called “Inside Out” made famous by the French artist J.R. This year, however, the scope of the exhibition is far bigger with some 140 giant sized black and white photos pasted onto private and public buildings. The public will already have noticed them all over the French side, from Sandy Ground to French Quarter. The theme of the exhibition is “St. Martin at Work.”

First Vice-President Valerie Damaseau in charge of culture congratulated Yolande Sylvestre in charge of the Culture Commission and Carole Tondu who set up the project.

“This research work has highlighted many professions that you can discover on the projection that runs behind me and in our neighbourhoods as you travel,” Damaseau said in her introduction. “These photos are for us precious testimonies of the resilience of the inhabitants of our island. They are also a tribute to the men and women who are involved in their daily work and help our region to recover.

“Carole Tondu can confirm that this ‘Faces II’ was prepared before Hurricane Irma hit. These photos are all the more telling today because they deal with a major subject for our economy. I am convinced that this new exhibition will contribute to enhancing the work and know-how of St. Martin. In any case, that is the meaning we wish to give to this event: to promote our island and its components. To honour our people.”

The eight candidates were selected from 15 photographs analysed by a selection committee. The jury was chaired by Sylvestre, with Wilfred Moizan, Alain Jouet, Claudio Arnell, and Tondu.

Judging was based on respect for the theme, staging of the image, visual impact of the work, originality of the framing, quality of the rendering. Cash prizes awarded were first, second and third place were 500 euros, 350 euros, and 250 euros.

Individuals who authorized the photo posters to be pasted onto their homes were James Irish, of 73, Rue de Sandy Ground, Paul Whit of 90, Rue de Sandy Ground, Mont Vernon Commercial Centre represented by Christopher Lopez, and Gilles Parisot from the Multi Roof company. Additionally, SEMSAMAR and Préfète Sylvie Feucher were thanked for permitting the posters to be pasted onto their buildings.

Added Damaseau: “I invite the population, the younger generations, to take the time to look at the 145 portraits displayed in our streets and above all to stop and discover the trades of St. Martin. Many thanks to our partners, SEMSAMAR, the Cultural Affairs Department of Guadeloupe and the Ministry of Culture who helped us to finance this exhibition. Thank you to our teams and service providers for the work they have done and above all to the photographers who have been able to highlight our local personalities through the work they do.”
