Collectivité investing 2.9 million euros in sport/playground repairs | THE DAILY HERALD

MARIGOT–The Collectivité has committed 2.9 million euros in 2018 for the rehabilitation of the territory’s eight sport/playground venues (plateau sportif).

These venues were the subject of a major rehabilitation programme in 2016. At the time, the Collectivité spent around 1 million euros for this rehabilitation work, for the grounds and equipment. Then Hurricane Irma came and destroyed everything.

In addition to the damage caused by the hurricanes, some of these venues were used as temporary storage areas for hurricane debris. Thus, since last September, none of these venues was in a position to welcome sports associations, young people or schools.

Some 82,000 euros will be spent on the sports facilities adjacent to Thelbert Carti Stadium and Spring in Quartier d’Orléans, 113,000 euros on the media library outdoor facilities in Concordia and 82,000 euros on the sports ground in Sandy Ground.

Renovation work on these sport/playgrounds began at the end of June 2018. They are scheduled for completion by the end of August and to be fully accessible during the last quarter of 2018.

Some 413,000 euros will be spent on the sports facilities in Friar’s Bay and 439,000 euros for the one in La Savane. Rehabilitation work mainly concerns playgrounds, repairs to fences, perimeter walls and lighting. Bids have been launched to replace equipment (for basketball, volleyball, soccer goals, etcetera). This work will be completed at the end of 2018.

As for the Grand Case sports field, located close to the Cultural Centre, this is currently awaiting the definition of the projects planned by the Collectivité. The Collectivité has scheduled the site to be operational as of September. A security inspection is programmed in August.

The Collectivité and its Youth and Sports Department under the direction of Charles-Henri Palvair, Director of the Human Development Department Thierry Gombs, and First Vice-President Valérie Damaseau are committed to ensuring that all sports facilities are completely renovated and operational by the end of 2018.

Galisbay sports hall will be demolished in August and will not be rebuilt. Instead, the Collectivité plans to create a “Palais des Sports” to be located in La Savane. It will have a real gymnasium, sports facilities, including a dojo and fitness room, with bleachers for 1,500 people. The project has been launched and set for completion by 2022.
