Cruise arrivals in July surpass expectations

POINTE BLANCHE–There was a 16.5 per cent bump on cruise passenger arrivals for July compared to the same month last year. That increase translates to 85,432 passengers while July 2016 had 73,338, according to figures released by Port St. Maarten on Thursday. A total of 1,097,040 cruise passengers flowed into St. Maarten in the first seven months of this year via 387 vessel calls.

Port St. Maarten Management said in a press statement it was pleased with the growth, especially considering challenges faced by other ports of call in the region. A number of Caribbean cruise destinations have reported declines in their numbers for 2016.

The Port will attend Seatrade Europe next month in Hamburg, Germany, to meet with cruise line executives with the aim of growing destination’s cruise passenger numbers. Port representatives showcase the destination and inform executives and other attendees about developments at Dr. A.C. Wathey Cruise and Cargo Facilities.
