MARIGOT–Non-profit association Caribbean Sail Training (CST) co-hosted a reception on board tall ship Christian Radich on Monday afternoon at the commercial pier in Galisbay before the vessel departed Tuesday bound for Europe.

It was her second visit to St. Martin this season, the first being just a few weeks after the passage of Hurricane Irma. The vessel has also visited St. Maarten in the past.

Some 100 CST members, invited guests, media, port authorities and elected government officials sampled sponsored Cuvée Jean Jarreau wines and delicious Gelato from the Gelateria Milano on Front Street, Philipsburg.

The ship’s Chief Steward Jens, who is responsible for buying the provisions and all the food and beverages together with the chef and galley crew, had prepared a delicious snack and hors d’œuvre buffet for the guests.

Captain Fridtjof Jungeling, captain of the Christian Radich, thanked CST and the ship’s agent Yacht Assistance for all the services that had been provided each time the vessel came to the Caribbean.

He remarked it was a huge advantage to be a CST member vessel, as the vessels much appreciate the waiving or reduction of port and docking fees in many of the Leeward and Windward Islands.

In Cartagena for example, where the port is not a CST member the vessel had to pay thousands of dollars in port fees which they cannot really afford to pay, and in an example of great cooperation in Cuba, the captain and crew members received a police escort during a tour.

The Port of Marigot in St. Martin is one of CST’s friendliest Sail Training Vessel ports and has twice won a special award.

Captain Jungeling and crew were also full of praise for the services of another CST cooperating agent, Gerard Petrelluzzi, in Guadeloupe and Les Saintes when the vessel visited those islands.

Christian Radich has been on a three-month voyage to Cuba and other ports of call in South America before returning to St. Martin. All provisioning for the voyage was done locally during a week’s stay while new crew and trainees came on board. She will now make a stop in Bermuda before sailing on to the Netherlands and later back to Scandinavia.

In the next few days other CST member vessels are expected in the Bay of Marigot – namely Wylde Swan, Eye of the Wind, Fryderyk Chopin and Salomon.

The Maritime School of the West Indies and Life Rafts etc. were co-sponsors of Monday’s reception.
