Damaged cable in US affects TelEm Internet performance | THE DAILY HERALD

POND ISLAND–A damaged fibre cable in Jacksonville, Florida, caused performance issues with TelEm Group’s Internet service in St. Maarten on Monday.

  The damaged cable was located between Jacksonville Beach and Miami and was reported damaged on Monday morning, TelEm Group said in a press release.

  Technicians and engineers at TelEm Group and Smitcoms were in contact with operators of the damaged cable and had learned that they were working diligently to carry out the necessary repairs.

  The company said two redundant connections had been put into service to maintain Internet connections on the island. However, until the main fibre cable was fully restored, customers may have experienced slower performance of their Internet and data connections.

  TelEm said it had been assured on Monday afternoon that the repairs would be carried out as quickly as possible and service would be restored to normal once the repair was completed. TelEm apologised to customers and members of the public for any inconvenience caused by the damaged fibre cable in Jacksonville, Florida, which was beyond the company’s control.

  The Daily Herald was informed late Monday evening that TelEm Group Internet services were back to “normal performance” from approximately 9:20pm, following repair of the damaged cable.

  The cable operators in Jacksonville said two pits had to be excavated to gain access to the damaged cable, which then had to be spliced in two parts.

  However, the repairs are temporary, to enable the proper functioning of telecommunication carriers affected, including TelEm Group and its customers.

  As of 9:20pm Monday, immediately after the connection was restored, TelEm Group Internet customers began experiencing better performance of their Internet services. The company apologised again to customers for the inconvenience of having reduced performance of their Internet service Monday.
