TAMPA, Florida–St. Maartener Damali Bryson is not one to shy away from a challenge. The Registered Critical Care Nurse has a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Hogeschool van Amsterdam and is certified by the Amstel Academie in Amsterdam as a high care nurse. She was not content to just halt there.

The registered nurse just earned her Master’s degree in nursing with a concentration in leadership and management from the United States-based Walden University. Her nursing career, to date, spans almost 16 years with St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) where she is employed in the Emergency Department.

“My ultimate goal is to have a significant impact on our healthcare system by becoming a leader. In this capacity, I can promote health and wellness while simultaneously advocating for patients and the nursing profession,” said Bryson, who is the daughter of Kenneth Bryson and Oldine Bryson-Pantophlet.

Her drive to further her higher education was fuelled by her goal of bettering the country’s healthcare and the community’s wellbeing. The Milton Peters College HAVO graduate said that drive led her to enrol in Walden University’s Master of Science in Nursing programme.

“Having successfully earned this Master’s degree, I am well-prepared for a leadership role in healthcare. I am also interested in getting involved in nursing research and publishing articles that will contribute to the improvement of patient care and the nursing profession,” Bryson said.

She covered her hectic shifts at SMMC and devoted attention to her studies to earn this latest milestone in her academic career. However, this is not the end of Bryson’s learning journey. “I am open to the idea of getting a Ph.D. in nursing in the future,” she said.
