David Gozal passes away while surfing

MARIGOT–Word spread around the French side on Monday that David Gozal, a long-time resident of the island, died while surfing at the Wilderness break near Grand Case Beach, French Cul-de-Sac, late Sunday afternoon.

Capitaine Emmanuel Maignan confirmed a British man in his early fifties was brought ashore in a boat after succumbing to a suspected heart attack while out surfing. It was understood he passed away before reaching the hospital.

An avid surfer, Gozal worked for the past few years as a volunteer for Fête de La Mer in Grand Case, providing the English commentary for the water sport activities.

He was also well known for his sense of humour and talent as an entertainer, musician and singer, working at hotels on both sides of the island.

He leaves behind a teenage son, Joshua, from his relationship with the late Christine de la Cruz, former Editor of Destination Magazine.

  1. David brought such joy to others through his singing and performances, as well as his volunteer work. I am only an annual visitor to the island, but he will be missed by so many like me, in addition to island residents. My deepest sympathy to his son and family.
