PHILIPSBURG–“I would like to suggest the following as my contribution to the St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation (SCDF) idea campaign: to invite the neighbouring islands to participate in the parade with their costumes; pay tribute to the stalwarts of Carnival; some slogans could be, ‘Ready for Fifty,’ ‘Fete for Fifty,’ ‘Fit for Fifty,’ and ‘Together for Fifty,’” stated Acting Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunications (TEATT) Cornelius de Weever on Wednesday.
SCDF, the entity that organises the annual Carnival festivities, started a campaign this week to garner ideas for the 50th anniversary of the country’s largest cultural display and requested ideas about events, slogans, projects, activities, etc. Persons have until June 10 to submit them to email address
sxmcarnival50@gmail.com
Carnival is one of St. Maarten’s biggest tourist attractions and a key part of the country’s annual calendar of events. It brings forth economic benefits for the country’s tourism-oriented economy.
“I am pleased that SCDF has given the community the opportunity to share their ideas with them which can only add to the cultural enhancement of this event and make it a truly golden one,” De Weever added.
SCDF also stated this week that submission of an idea does not mean it would automatically be included in the way the person who submitted it intended, but it could be incorporated in some form or fashion.
