Delta Petroleum Managing Director Christian Papaliolios and SNSM St. Martin President René-Jean Duret, shake hands on the partnership renewal in front of the completely renovated SNS 129 lifeboat.
MARIGOT–On the occasion of the return to St. Martin of lifeboat SNS 129 (Notre-Dame de la Garoupe), damaged during the Hurricane Gonzalo on October 13, 2014, and subsequently completely renovated in a Saint-Malo boatyard, the Delta Petroleum company has renewed its partnership agreement with the Société National de Sauvegard en Mer (SNSM) of St. Martin with the provision of diesel fuel for rescue operations at sea.
Up to now, the partnership was limited to the delivery of fuel for the rescue operations of the semi-rigid SNS 978-1 (Rescue Star) acquired by SNSM in April 2015.
Delta Petroleum Managing Director Christian Papaliolios was keen to be present during the first refueling of the SNS 129 at the Delta Petroleum station in Sandy Ground on Saturday, April 27.
He praised “the volunteerism, dedication and self-sacrifice of the members of the local SNSM station, who, despite their professional or family constraints, devote part of their time to a mission of public service, rescue at sea, saving lives and boats, in sometimes difficult weather conditions.”
He added, “Delta Petroleum was very proud to help by contributing to the operating cost of the SNSM of St. Martin.”
SNSM station President René-Jean Duret thanked Papaliolios for the renewal of this partnership, recalling that “the first rescuers are the donors.”
The SNSM station of St. Martin survives only with 95 per cent private donations. Without donors, there can be no rescue at sea on an island where nautical tourism is one of the main pillars of the economy.
SNSM St. Martin also thanked the shipping line CMA-CGM for making it possible for SNS 129 to return to St. Martin.
