ST. EUSTATIUS–Director-General for Environment and International Affairs at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment Roald Lapperre paid a working visit to St. Eustatius since Monday afternoon.

Travelling with him were coordinator Caribbean Netherlands Environment Milton Horn and Deputy Director of Safety Sebe Buitenkamp.

On Monday, they had a meeting with Vice President and General Manager of NuStar/Terminals NV Terence Keogh and they also toured the facility.

On Tuesday, the delegation sat down with waste-management plant manager Jeffrey Lewis and with Chief Executive Officer of St. Eustatius Utility Company STUC Fred Cuvalay to discuss the status of the waste plant and the dump.

During the meeting, they also spoke about a proposal for a waste-to-energy plant in Statia, a ban on plastic bags, and about (solar) energy.

Nature and environment took centre stage during a meeting with Jessica Berkel and Francois Mille of St. Eustatius National Parks STENAPA. They were joined by Director Johan Stapel of Caribbean Netherlands Science Institute (CNSI) as they went on a boat tour. They toured the Marine Underwater Park and discussed marine spatial planning where travel routes and anker zones were concerned and canal protection.

The delegation also went on a Get-to-Know-Statia-Tour during which they visited Turtle Beach, the waste plant and the dump site. They were also given a tour of the Solar Park with STUCO’S Irwin Jack, and visited the car wreck depository, F.D. Roosevelt Airport and some of the roads that are scheduled to be paved, such as Cherry Road and the Road to Jeems.

The ministerial representatives also had a sit-down meeting with Government Commissioners Marcolino “Mike” Franco and Mervin Stegers and their team regarding infrastructure and environment.
