The first of four Hurricane Expo community evenings was held in Simpson Bay on June 6 and drew a crowd despite the rainy weather. The goal was to raise public awareness about preparations prior to the hurricane season peak. Information was shared about preparation in case of evacuation, shelter rules and the importance of valid travel documents. UNICEF and the Court of Guardianship addressed child protection. The Association of Psychologists and Allied Professionals discussed the mental impact of storms.
Animal Defenders tackled how to prep for a pet. Insurance provider NAGICO presented statistics and lessons learnt since Hurricane Irma, with special emphasis on not being under-insured. The second community evening will be in John Larmonie Center at 7:30pm Wednesday, June 12, when the National Recovery Programme Bureau and the Central Bank of Curaçao and St. Maarten will be additional presenters. The community evenings are a precursor to the Hurricane Expo set for Clem Labega Square from 10:00am to 4:00pm Saturday, June 22.
