Diwali, the Festival of Light, was celebrated by Hindus living on St. Maarten on Wednesday. The festival is a time for thanking God for the blessings of the past year, being with family and lighting the tradition diya (oil lamp made of clay), as a symbol of banishing darkness in all things. The festival honours Lakshmi, the Goddess of (spiritual) wealth. People also start the new business year at Diwali, and some Hindus will say prayers to Lakshmi for a successful year. Diyas are lit to help Lakshmi find her way into people’s homes. The festival celebrates the victory of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance.
