THE HAGUE–Minister Plenipotentiary Doran-York honoured twelve women in The Hague, ahead of International Women’s Day today, Wednesday. The women were singled out for their individual achievements and contribution to St. Maarteners living in the Netherlands.
Doran-York said she has met and learned of people residing in the Netherlands for a very long period who have been going beyond the call of duty to assist others in need especially students and newcomers.
“I salute these Ladies because of the many lives that they have touched in a very special way, from the elderly, right down to the students. You have been an inspiration and encouragement to your fellow countrymen and women, by leading by example while constantly influencing, pushing and encouraging them. You are now considered as their heroes. Your actions should not and will not go unrecognized,” she said.
Doran-York pointed out the strength that women display when they band together to get things done. “We see the great results every day,” she said as she thanked them for their hard work and commitment.
Deputy Minister Plenipotentiary Hasani Ellis also congratulated the honourees. He said he knows the strength of women as he saw in his childhood days when his mother and grandmother worked extremely hard and succeeded to assist in maintaining their families.
“Without these strong women in his life, he would not be where he is today and so therefore he has a great deal of respect for women on the whole,” he said.
The honourees thanked Doran-York and her Cabinet for recognizing them.
St. Maarteners in the Netherlands, whether residing there, living temporarily for education purposes, for medical reasons or for whatever other reasons are encouraged to contact the Cabinet at St. Maarten House for assistance when necessary.
