ST. EUSTATIUS–The Democratic Party (DP) of St. Eustatius last week hosted its second retreat at Knippenga Villas in St. Eustatius.
The two-day retreat on August 5 and 6 focused on subjects such as the island’s constitutional status, the process that led to Statia becoming a Public Entity of the Netherlands, the different sections and entities that form or play a role in government, and the basic principles of public speaking.
Presenters were persons such as former Stat Secretary of Constitutional Affairs Leonora Sneek-Gibbs, former State Secretary of Development Cooperation and Justice Ernie Simmons, and former Commissioner and Island Council member Nicolaas “Koos” Sneek.
President of the DP party board Winston Fleming facilitated group sessions wherein campaign strategy was discussed, and participants were able to self-reflect and provide constructive criticism and ideas towards improving the entire party.
Feedback received, especially from the younger generation, proved to be especially surprising and insightful.
“The fact that we can provoke the future generation to actively participate and take an active role in the future of the island, is quite a feat in these times,” retreat organisers said.
The highlight of the retreat was the “fake” Island Council meeting that was organized, giving participants the opportunity to experience how it is to be Commissioners and Island Council members in preparation for future appointments.
All in all, the retreat was deemed a success wherein all predetermined objectives were achieved. Participants had a good time together, it was stated.
