PHILIPSBURG–New guidelines will be proposed to govern the financing granted to students to pursue their tertiary studies, when Education Minister Wycliffe Smith presents the draft law on study-financing to Members of Parliament (MPs) next week. The exact date of the meeting could not be ascertained.
Smith said on Wednesday that he looks forward to presenting the draft law to MPs. He said study-financing grants and loans for further study have been governed for years by policies that originated before St Maarten became a country within the Dutch Kingdom on October 10, 2010.
“A complete new law on study financing has been drafted that will give guidelines for the various studies,” he said. The draft will cover areas such as study amount, study locations and repayment of studying loans, amongst other things. “I look forward to pushing this law in parliament so that finally the Division of Study Financing will have a law passed by parliament that they can work with,” Smith said.
