Dunbar Campbell
PHILIPSBURG–He is back in St. Maarten again. Four years ago, Aruba-born US Marine veteran Dunbar Campbell held a sold-out book signing of his first novel at Chesterfields Restaurant. This time, he is back with his third novel, Winds of Fédon, an historical novel based on the true story of Julien Fédon, a slave-master who led a slave revolt in Grenada in 1795.
The rebellion lasted 16 months, during which 7,000 died. Fédon himself mysteriously vanished, and to this day historians still speculate what happened to him. More than 200 years later, Fédon still commands a legendary appeal on the island.
Campbell will be signing his books again at Chesterfields, a restaurant he has loved and visited for 25 years. The book event will be held 5:00 to 8:00pm Saturday, July 6.
Campbell was born in Aruba, but grew up in Grenada, where danger honed his earliest writing skills. As a student activist on the turbulent island, he wrote for and distributed anti-government newspapers in support of a revolutionary movement under the leadership of Maurice Bishop, a British-educated lawyer.
When the government crushed the organisation, Campbell migrated to the United States and enlisted in the Marine Corps. His “welcome to America” at age 19 was boot-camp basic training in South Carolina. Campbell’s former comrades eventually overthrew the Grenada government in the 1979 revolution.
Meanwhile, Campbell served tours on Marine Corps bases in North Carolina, Virginia, Japan, and Hawaii, where he was stationed when a violent coup in 1983 led to then-Prime Minister Bishop’s execution and the US invasion.
Among documents the US military seized from Bishop’s collection and stored at the National Archives in Maryland is a passionate hand-written letter of congratulations to Prime Minister Bishop, written four years earlier and signed, “Sergeant Dunbar Campbell, U.S. Marines.”
Today, Campbell is a writer, research director and public speaker. He has completed 16 marathons and his scuba-diving certification over the years.
