UWI Open Campus Anguilla Continuing and Professional Education Graduates.

ANGUILLA–Eighty-six successful participants of the 2017/2018 University of the West Indies (UWI) Anguilla Open Campus Continuing and Professional Education Programme gathered with family and friends on Thursday evening, July 26, at the Teachers’ Resource Centre in The Valley to receive their Certificates of Achievement and Certificates of Participation.

They were congratulated by Acting Chief Education Officer and Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education Dawn Reid, who quoted Einstein saying “Wisdom is not a product of schooling, but is the lifelong attempt to acquire it.”

She said that taking advantage of the continuing education classes offered at UWI Anguilla reflects a level to lifelong learning and pursuit of wisdom, which increases personal development and skills and contributes to national development. Reid added that increased knowledge must always be accompanied by the soft skills of a good positive attitude, good interpersonal skills and a good work ethic.

Twenty-three participants received Certificates of Achievement in Supervisory Management, 21 in Conversational Spanish, 14 in Occupational Health and Safety, and five in Small Business Management. Receiving Certificates of Participation were 20 graduates of the Foundation Maths course, and three from the Mastering English course.

Phyllis Fleming-Banks, Manager of the UWI Open Campus said, “We are pleased to be celebrating with our continuing and professional education (CPE) student graduates. Although most of them already have their degrees, or have professional experience, they are here because they all want to improve their skillsets. They come from a wide cross- section of the Anguilla community, and we are very pleased that they have chosen to enrol in courses offered by UWI to expand their knowledge.”

The mission of Anguilla’s UWI Open Campus, established 10 years ago, is to meet the educational needs of students right on the island instead of requiring students to travel to the three UWI campuses located in Jamaica, Trinidad and Barbados. This unique open campus approach is achieved by offering courses in undergraduate, post graduate and continuing education through three venues – onsite, online, and on demand.

Each graduating class was represented by a class member who took a few minutes at the podium to speak of the positive impacts of their particular class on both their personal and professional lives. The consensus was that although the classwork was challenging, they formed friendships and positive experiences as they worked together to meet the requirements. Additionally, the audience was happily surprised and entertained by some Conversational Spanish class students performing a Spanish folk dance.

The evening ended with the induction of the 2018/2019 executive members of the Anguilla Chapter of the UWI Open Campus Guild of Students.
