MARIGOT–The two schools in Grand Case, Ghislaine Rogers kindergarten and Elie Gibs Elementary School captured much of the Collectivité’s attention during the past school year as both schools were heavily damaged by Hurricane Irma.

The Collectivité dedicated 618,000 euros for repairs.

The pupils of Elie Gibs were relocated until the Easter holidays in the premises of the neighbouring nursery school, Ghislaine Rogers. These two establishments had to play a supporting role during the school year to receive the pupils of Emile Larmonie school in Cul-de-Sac which was destroyed by the hurricane.

In the Elie Gibs school, emergency repairs to the premises began in February 2018 so pupils could return to their lessons during the month of April, thus freeing up space in the nursery school. Doors and windows, and the fence were repaired. Two rooms that were not allocated to classes, including the library, were converted into classrooms.

President Daniel Gibbs had made a commitment to parents of students who had shown their impatience by staging a protest march in the streets during February. Parents of students were received by the President and his Vice-President in charge of school affairs, Annick Pétrus, to announce solutions that were held.

However, the Collectivité noted the past school year has been complicated and disrupting for these two Grand Case schools with schedules rotating for the first two terms. Rehabilitation work continued throughout the year, including the repair of the refectory roof, which was completed in May. Major roof repairs to the buildings were scheduled for the end of August for this school and should continue until mid-November 2018.

Despite the ongoing repair work, 190 students are enrolled for the September 2018/19 school year, which will have 15 functioning classes.

Elie Gibs Elementary School in Grand Case will welcome students residing at La Savane (gas station), Grand Case, Anse Marcel, Route de L’Espérance, Hope Estate, Mont Vernon1, Mont Vernon 2, Mont Vernon 3, and Cul-de-Sac.
