Emmanuel calls for SMHDF board members’ resignation

PHILIPSBURG– Minister of Public Housing, Spatial Planning, Environment and Infrastructure VROMI Christophe Emmanuel has requested that members of the St. Maarten Housing Development Foundation (SMHDF) board resign immediately.

The Minister stated on Wednesday during the Council of Ministers press briefing that he had received a number of complaints since taking office last year about residents living in Belvedere homes living in deplorable conditions.

He forwarded a letter to the SMHDF Director last week relaying his sentiments. He said what was the last straw for him is when he saw the condition of a home of an 86-year-old woman who used up all her savings and received no assistance from the Foundation.

He said some of the homes even have electrical issues and residents are forced to live elsewhere while paying rent for their homes to the Foundation. Emmanuel said discussions are ongoing, but he has not yet received an official response from the board regarding his request for the Government-appointed members to resign.
