PHILIPSBURG–The Prosecutor’s Office has discontinued the pre-trial detention of National Alliance (NA) Member of Parliament (MP) and former Minister of Public Housing, Environment, Spatial Development and Infrastructe VROMI Christophe Emmanuel and the Chief of his Cabinet, a woman M.A.R.
The Prosecutor’s Office said their pre-trial detention is no longer needed for the investigation.
“Today the questioning of two witnesses and a suspect was successfully completed before 12:30pm. This was the most important reason for the detention of the suspects. Subsequently the suspects have been released. The investigation will continue,” said the Prosecutor’s Office in a statement.
Emmanuel and R. were arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of abuse of position and forgery, or complicity in such acts as part of an investigation named “Begonia.”
Both suspects’ homes were searched on Tuesday morning.
“The suspects are accused of unlawfully long leasing government land to acquaintances at the end of their tenure in 2017. As a result, other applicants were disadvantaged,” said the Prosecutor’s Office on Tuesday.
