EU Ambassador Fernando Ponz Cantó with Prime Minister Silveria Jacobs.

PHILIPSBURG–Issues related to projects in St. Maarten funded by the European Union (EU) were discussed when EU Ambassador Fernando Ponz Cantó paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Silveria Jacobs on Tuesday.

The two discussed the ongoing EU-funded projects in St. Maarten, the challenges being faced in the process, and St. Maarten’s commitment to finalising these projects.

Jacobs said the challenges had been highlighted in a meeting held with the Ministry of General Affairs Department of Home Affairs and Kingdom Relations BAK staff.

“Ambassador Ponz Cantó was very happy the projects had government’s attention and pledged to continue to work with us to get them finalised,” she said.

The EU is a major contributor to many island states in the Caribbean region in disaster management projects and programmes, which was highlighted at the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) conference where Ponz Cantó was also a featured speaker on Tuesday evening.
