MARIGOT–Experts from Federation des Industries Nautique (FIN) are arriving Monday to carry out a complete assessment of damage to marinas, marine businesses and boats, Marine trades association Metimer President Bulent Gulay disclosed on Wednesday.
Gulay said the marine sector had suffered considerable damage to its infrastructure during Hurricanes Irma and Maria.
“Some 95 per cent of boats were damaged, and half of them were lost forever, but we won’t get the true scale of the impact of the hurricanes until the surveyors have finished their work” he said.
FIN will be coordinating with Government and major boat builders such as Jeanneau and Beneteau to secure materials for St. Martin.
“Undoubtedly we will need masts, engines and other materials to get the charter businesses up and running again,” he added.
According to Gulay, FIN is a giant organisation with a budget of 17 million euros. Therefore, he was confident the St. Martin marine sector will get the help needed.
