PHILIPSBURG–Firemen were alerted to an ongoing fire on the E. Camille Richardson Street opposite the office of the Ombudsman early on Wednesday morning,. Firefighters arrived at the house were told that an elderly man was trapped in a back room of the home.
Flames were seen from the windows and smoke consumed the area while the man called for assistance. Firemen quickly suited up and rushed in the home, rescuing the man from the fire. Two fire trucks were stationed outside the home and quickly contained the blaze from spreading.
Fire Officer in Charge (OVD) at the scene Silvanico Pauletta said that the fire department responded quickly to the call. Two hours before, around 11:00pm, there was another fire in Cole Bay. “We responded to that call swiftly, four persons lived in the home and our firefighters managed to also contain the fire at that home.”
“We still have to determine the cause of both fires. We would like to thank the police for their assistance and a special thanks to the firefighters who are alert every time a call comes in. They do work very hard and maintain their professionalism in every situation,” stated Pauletta.
The rescued elderly man was brought to the St. Maarten Medical Center for further treatment. No injuries were reported in the Cole Bay fire, according to officials on Wednesday.
